Who it's for
Gamers with a 1440p monitor, or anyone moving up from 1080p. New games run at high settings at 1440p, and competitive games like Fortnite, Valorant and CS2 go well past 144 FPS. 16GB of video memory keeps it ready for the next few years of games.
Why these parts
Graphics: Radeon RX 9070 (16GB). The best 1440p card for the money right now. It's clearly faster than the RTX 5060 Ti and has 16GB of video memory, where the RTX 5070 has 12GB. AMD's FSR upscaling adds frames in games that support it.
CPU: Ryzen 5 5600. Six cores, cooler in the box. At 1440p the graphics card does most of the work, so a pricier CPU adds little. It can hold the RX 9070 back a little in CPU-heavy games like Counter-Strike or big strategy games.
Motherboard: B550 Micro-ATX. Supports Resizable BAR (Smart Access Memory) and fast NVMe drives, and has four memory slots for later.
Memory: 16GB DDR4-3200. Enough for gaming. Two slots stay free, so 32GB later is a drop-in upgrade.
Storage: 1TB NVMe SSD. Room for several big games. Add a second drive later; the board has a spare M.2 slot.
Power supply: 650W. The build draws about 360W, and AMD recommends 650W for this card. It has the two 8-pin connectors the RX 9070 needs, no adapter.
Case: NZXT H5 Flow. Mesh front for airflow, fans included, and plenty of room for this card.
Why AM4 and not AM5?
Memory prices. In 2026, 16GB of DDR5 costs more than twice as much as 16GB of DDR4, and a Ryzen 7000 or 9000 build has to use DDR5. Spending that difference on the graphics card gets you far more FPS. If you want a platform with a longer upgrade path, the mid-range build moves to AM5.
Tweaks
- A bit more to spend: the RX 9070 XT is about 10–15% faster for a little more money. The 650W power supply is the minimum for it; a 750W is a safer fit.
- Streaming or lots of browser tabs: add a second 16GB kit for 32GB.
- Need to spend less: the $1000 build uses the same platform with an Arc B580.
